DescriptionUpper Margin reads, "DESCRIPTION DE LA NOUVELLE VIRGIN." Cartouche reads, "NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA/ Miliaria Germanica com/ munia 15 pro uno gradu."Label TextThis map is a first state and first edition map engraved by Johannes Cloppenburg in 1630. There are three total states to this map, and state one is distinguished by the lack of an engraved plate number in the top right hand corner and the shot silk or moire effect in the sea. Colonial Williamsburg has another first state and second edition of this map in the collection. Unlike the other map of the same state (2017-45), this map is hand-colored and has different letterpress text from the atlas at the back of the map. This map has a Latin letterpress header reading "AV LECTEVR," while the other map's header reads "HISPANIA NOVA." Cloppenburg's map is a fourth derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia. Cloppenburg engraved the map to be included in the Mercator-Hondius atlas (Atlas sive Cosmographicae). There is letter press text on the top and back of this map, indicating its usage inside of an atlas. This map and its other states and editions were fairly affordable for the seventeenth century consumer.ProvenanceBefore 2024, Elise Wright (Richmond, VA); 2024-present, given to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
