DescriptionPewter mug with straight tapered sides with a moulded rim, a fillet mid-band at the lower handle attachment, and a moulded flaring base band. Its scrolled handle is soldered to the body, has a simple grip at shoulder, and a bud terminal.Label TextSizeable mugs of this form were made in large numbers in 18th c. Philadelphia, especially by William Will. This example is both well-worn and extensively personalized, attesting to its enduring value. The outer surfaces of its body are covered with scratched-in inscriptions including letters and numerals, which may represent owner's initials and dates.Inscription(s)The outside of the body is covered in now largely illegible, scratched-in inscriptions, including "IS," "ASA," and "181."Mark(s)Bottom inside struck with "Wm WILL" in relief within a rectangle (Jacobs-286). Mark is 40-50% visible.ProvenanceAccording to the donor's notes, this mug came from the collection of Frank M. Powell.
