DescriptionSauceboat: Of circular plan with projecting upper section to body with outward-flaring sides, shaped rim, and broad triangular pouring lip; lower section of body of plain hemispherical form supported on broad circular splayed base with short waisted section above convex sides with moulded lower edge; S-shaped handle with scrolled finger grip and ridged face soldered to body at rim and to lower section.Label TextEnglish pewter sauceboats from the eighteenth century are scarce, and the majority of surviving examples are by Henry Joseph of London. Elected a yeoman of the Pewterers Company in 1736 and rising to master in 1771, Joseph is noteworthy for the broad range of domestic goods that he produced for the American market.Inscription(s)Owner's initials "MW" with two crowns above stamped on face of handle grip.Mark(s)Touch mark "H I" within a shaped rectangle on underside of base (Peal MPM 2687).
