DescriptionTeapot with slightly tapering cylindrical body with narrow flat shoulder and applied, beaded base molding. Straight, tapered, tubular spout. Pearwood handle, with scrolled thumbrest, in silver sockets. Flat circular cover with applied, beaded rim and collar; turned pearwood finial.Label TextTwo tea services by John Denziloe, purchased by George Mason of Fairfax County, Virginia, survive in the collections at his home, Gunston Hall. One consists of a tea canister and sugar basket of 1783/84 and a cream pot of the following year, the other of a teapot, tea canister, sugar basket, and cream pot, all of 1784/85. Both are of oval plan with engraved decoration and the Mason family crest and motto. Tradition asserts that Mason acquired four silver tea services for his four daughters.Mark(s)Center of base: crowned leopard's head; lion passant; date letter "T" for 1774-1775; black letter ID in rectangle.
