DescriptionCrown molding plane with rounded chamfers on the top and flat chamfers which end in a turn-out on the toe and heel ends. Its tote is centered.Label TextBorn Joseph Field and apprenticed to master planemaker Joseph Fuller sometime in the 1780s, Field was adopted by him in 1791. Field legally changed his name to Joseph Fuller, Jr., and operated as business partners with his adoptive father from about 1794 until 1798.
This impressive and very well made crown molder likely represents Fuller, Jr.'s work after the separation from his father but before 1817, when he was listed as a "blockmaker."
When Fuller, Sr. died in 1822, he left a quarter of his estate to his adopted son.Mark(s)J•FULLER in relief within a rectangle is struck into the toe (Elliott, GAWP 5th ed., p.139, imprint A).ProvenanceJanuary 2000, purchased by Thomas Elliott (Westbrook, CT); 2024, given to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)
