DescriptionLarge round plane with rounded chamfers on the top, and flat chamfers which end in a lamb's tongue on the toe and heel ends. Its wedge is of the relieved style Joseph Fuller, Sr. used (front portion of finial missing).Label TextAfter leaving the partnership with his adoptive father Joseph Fuller, Sr., Joseph, Jr. formed another professional union with Richard M. Field, his flesh and blood brother. The toolmaking venture only lasted an estimated seven years, and it appears the brothers went in different directions. By 1817, Fuller, Jr. was working as a blockmaker, and Field was listed as a merchant. They were surpassed in the planemaking business by their cousin, Isaac Field, who took over Joseph Fuller, Sr.'s business upon his death in 1822.Mark(s)FULLER & FIELD in relief within a lightly serrated rectangle is struck into the toe (Elliott, GAWP 5th ed., p.140). Two rectangular owner's marks, one superimposed on the other (GC ?), is also struck into the toe. The heel carries two "R" marks and a "6 / 8" size mark, all incuse.ProvenanceApril 1992, purchased by Thomas Elliott (Westbrook, CT); 2024, given to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)ca. 1720-1784
