DescriptionSupported by a flat surface, a bowl decorated with Oriental motifs is tipped on its side, spilling a variety of fruits, while other fruits surround and support it in its tipped position.
The 1 3/4-inch gilded frame is a period replacement.
Label TextThis theorem is an unsophisticated version of the popular Canton bowl and fruit design. Most of the fruits, with the exception of the peach at the far left and the strawberries under the bowl, are unevenly outlined and crudely shaded. Although the oriental bowl's design is typical of Canton bowls in other theorems, this artist has added curved lines in the sky representing birds that appear to be flying sideways.
The light, erratic brushstrokes in the foreground probably represent a marble tabletop; however, the surface extends more deeply on the right side of the composition than on the left. There is a large gap in the middle left of the theorem, leaving the peach and the foot of the bowl unsupported. Other examples of this design include peach leaves and additional fruit in this area, suggesting that this is an unfinished work.
