DescriptionSmall pewter strainer with shallow circular bowl of thin metal with plain rim; lower part of bowl pierced with circular holes in the design of a highly stylized floral blossom within a circle.Label TextSurviving punch strainers in a variety of materials date from the last quarter of the seventeenth century onward. The design of the piercing of this rare pewter example is of a common type in the form of a stylized floral blossom that could be easily laid out with the arcs of a compass. There is no evidence of the presence of a handle, and no known similar example in pewter with which to compare it.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)NoneProvenanceGift of John A. Hyman, Williamsburg, Virginia. Purchased by donor from Robin Bellamy Antiques, Witney, Oxfordshire. Said by dealer to have come out of the River Thames.
