Boxing is now lost, leaving an empty mortice lined with traces of adhesive.Label TextThough the maker of this plane is unknown, there has been some scholarly speculation that "J. Holt" may be a descendant of John Holt, a New London, Connecticut cabinetmaker. Killed in the horrific aftermath of Gen. Benedict Arnold's attack on Fort Griswold, fought on September 6, 1781, Holt's estate inventory included "sundry joiners tools."Mark(s)J•HOLT in relief within a serrated rectangle, struck into the toe (Elliott, GAWP 5th ed., p.187).ProvenanceNovember 1991, purchased by Thomas Elliott (Westbrook, CT); 2024, given to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)
