DescriptionCircular stepped foot with gadrooned band supports elongated pear-shaped body with s-shaped fluted spout with beading, foliage, and pendant drop. Stepped, domed lid with gadrooned border and bead-ornamented finial is hinged to upper handle socket, which has a scrolled juncture to body. Lower handle socket, with pad juncture, terminates in split scroll. Wooden handle with scrolled tumbpiece.
Label TextDuring the late 1760s, the Norfolk, Virginia, merchants Balfour & Barraud advertised the sale of "double plated coffee pots" in the Virginia Gazette. This fused silverplate coffeepot represents that form. It was made in Sheffield, England, by the firm of Henry Tudor & Co., who are known today for the wide range and high quality of their silver plated goods.Mark(s)Marked four times to right of handle with device said to be "HL" in Gothic script (marks are illegible, but conform to those shown for Henry Tudor & Co. on page 362 of Gordon Crosskey's Old Sheffield Plate (2011)
