DescriptionCircular stepped foot with gadrooned band supports elongated pear-shaped body with s-shaped fluted spout with beading, foliage, and pendant drop. Stepped, domed lid with gadrooned border and bead-ornamented finial is hinged to upper handle socket, which has a scrolled juncture to body. Lower handle socket, with pad juncture, terminates in split scroll. Wooden handle with scrolled thumbpiece.Label TextDuring the late 1760s, the Norfolk, Virginia, merchants Balfor & Barraud advertised the sale of "double plated coffee pots" in the Virginia Gazette. This fused silver plate coffeepot represents that form. It was made in Sheffield, England, by the firm of Henry Tudor & Co., who are known today for the wide range and high quality of their silver plated goods. This coffeepot graces the corner cupboard in the dining room of the newly reconstructed coffeehouse operated by Richard Charlton.Inscription(s)Engraved with armorial crest of a coronet and seven plumes on side.Mark(s)Marked four times to right of handle with device said to be "HL" in Gothic script (marks are illegible, but conform to those shown for Henry Tudor & Co. on page 362 of Gordon Crosskey's Old Sheffield Plate (2011).
