DescriptionGlobular body with flaring rim and three protruding short spouts alternating with three small scroll handles on circular base with upward tapering stem. Landscape scene on container and linear decoration in underglaze blue. Bottom of base is flat and unglazed.Label TextVessels of this form were produced throughout the second half of the seventeenth century, and the earlier ones were left undecorated. Recorded examples are dated 1650, 1661, and 1683. Fragments of a scroll and of the body of a container of this form have been excavated at Jamestown Island in Virginia (Jl2939). A nearly complete vessel with the glaze no longer intact was excavated at Newington plantation in South Carolina. Though generally considered to be vases, these vessels with three spouts may have been used to contain a liquid, perhaps wine. The London attribution is based on the glaze, the body, and the color of the decoration.Inscription(s)NoMark(s)NoProvenanceWinifred Williams Antiques, London
