DescriptionAppearance: Square back armchair with vase shaped splat pierced with three lozenges and one pie wedge shape lozenge below; straight legs, square in cross section; beaded edges of stiles, crest rail, seat rails, and front corners of front legs; H form stretchers between front and rear legs, rear stretcher; shaped and molded arms and arm supports. Slipseat replaced.ProvenanceLetter from Lissie Hamilton/Lassiter? [Mrs. Randolph Hamilton/Lassiter?] of Williamsburg, VA to Dr. R. C. M. Page indicates that the chair was one of a set bought at the sale of Lord Dunmore's property by an English gentleman, Mr. William Trebell, and given to his niece (and adopted daughter) Miss. Lucy Galt. Miss Galt married John Saunders (the uncle of Professor Robert Saunders, formerly President of William and Mary). When she died, her son Reverend WIlliam Saunders of Philadelphia gave it to his cousin Miss. Sally Galt of Wiliamsburg, who gave it to her cousin, the author. The author is offering to sell the chair to her kinsman Dr. Page as "circumstances have since rendered it necessary."
