DescriptionSlip-decorated earthenware storage jar of tapered form with high neck and coggled everted rim, decorated on each side with foliate-like spots and dashes in green slip and on the other two sides ornamented with molded and applied lion's mask handles with incised manes, stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG" on the shoulder.Label TextThis flowerpot or urn is marked with a stamp indicating it was made at the Bell Pottery while under the ownership of Samuel Bell and his sons at the end of the 19th century. The Bell family had created traditional earthenware and stoneware in the Valley of Virginia for generations. The applied lions on the sides of this piece were made from molds that were originally used by Solomon Bell earlier in the century.Mark(s)S. BELL & SON / STRASBURGProvenanceDavid L.
