DescriptionOval, lead-glazed earthenware dish with coggled rim, red-brown slip ground, with copper oxide and white trailed-slip decoration reading "Ware / plenty Come / and buy".Label TextSimilarities to a signed work by the potter John Betts Gregory form the basis for the attribution of this earthenware dish. Its motto "Ware/plenty Come/and buy" suggests that pottery is being advertised for sale. Other objects ascribed to this potter also feature humorous or philosophical phrases executed in trailed white slip enhanced with copper oxide decoration.Inscription(s)"Ware / plenty Come / and buy" is written in off-white slip on surface of dish.ProvenanceFound in Sandwich, Mass; unidentified antiques dealer; Steven Tyng, South Orleans, Mass.; Brian Cullity, Sagamore, Mass.
