Descriptiontheorem, framed painting paint on velvetLabel TextVelvet was a popular material on which to do theorem painting. Unlike the flat, hard surface of paper, the texture of the fabric absorbed the paint, obscuring the edges of the stenciled design and softening its effect. The harmonious blend of colors and shapes in this painting is reminiscent of the sophisticated floral engravings so popular in England in the eighteenth century.ProvenanceAbby Aldrich Rockefeller; given by the latter to the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, in 1939; given by MoMA to CWF in June 1954.
