DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain plate with scalloped rim, and painted in the Imari Japanese style, with a spray of chrysanthemums in the middle. The rim is divided into twelve panels: four large ones containing prunus blossom and chrysanthemums, and eight smaller ones in pairs filled with two different diaper patterns in underglaze blue, red, two shades of green, and gilt. On the reverse rim are three sprays of tree peony.Label TextAlthough this Chelsea copy of a Japanese pattern is today generally referred to as brocade Imari, the 1756 catalog describes it as "rare [or fine] old japan pattern blue and gold." The various forms (plates, dishes, and compotiers) are always described as "scollop'd." Of the four patterns found with the blue anchor mark, brocade Imari survives in the greatest number. The pattern was adopted slightly later at other English porcelain factories, including Derby and Worcester.
