DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain plate with scalloped and slightly fluted rim. The plate is decorated in the Japanese style with a central geometric chrysanthemum painted in red-orange and gold. The chrysanthemum is encircled in a gold scalloped line. The ledge and cavetto are asymmetrically decorated with a two limbs from a prunus plant painted in purple, red, and gold. There are also scattered bamboo leaves and three butterflies.
Label TextThe shape of this plate is very close to that of CWF accession 1962-30, but the basic elements of the decoration have been reversed. The arched floral spray is at the rim rather than in the middle, while the radiating panels have been moved to the center. The inspiration is thus seen to have derived from Japan, whence the actual design itself may well have come.Inscription(s)NoMark(s)Anchor painted in red on reserse.ProvenanceSold at auction without information concerning owner: Sotheby & CO., CATALOGUE OF AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF ENGLISH PORCELAIN, THE PROPERY OF A GENTLEMAN April 2, 1968 (London, 1968), lot 29.
