DescriptionSmall buff bodied plate with circular, press molded shape. Sharp relief pressed patterns of stylized foliage and geometric designs in center area of interior. Near crimped rim are pressed linear and zigzagged borders. Light brown slip ground with some of central relief filled in cloisonné style with very dark brown or cream colored slip. Alternating dark and light slip on border in radiating lines. Interior coated with pale yellow slip.Label TextThis press-molded red clay plate is decorated with intricate relief patterns. Note that, although the slip-decorator used the cloisonné approach in the central reserve, he chose to ignore the textured outer border and to apply rays of light and dark slip instead. This piece has traditionally been associated with Staffordshire. Elements of the raised floral pattern are, however, somewhat similar to designs on a press-mold dug from a 1640-1660 context at a kiln site at Brookhill, Buckley, Clwyd, in Wales.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)NoneProvenanceFrom Thorpe Malsor Hall near Kettering.
