DescriptionPorringer: pierced handle of flowered type with wedge-shaped attachment to bowl at rim; broad circular bowl with vertical rim, short convex sides, and flat base with short foot ring on underside. "IT/MF" in block letters stamped on face of handle. (Unidentified).Label TextThis is an early example of a porringer with a handle of so-called old English type. The handle has on its underside at the point of its attachment with the bowl a thickening bar of narrow wedge-shaped cross-section and a central tab of triangular outline. A raised ridge between the relief-cast initials could either be a relief-cast device or the vestige of earlier conical strengthening devices. Its booged body has a flat bottom without recess. These details, as well as the character of the touch mark and the initialing of the triangular handle tab, all contribute to its dating from the late seventeenth century.Inscription(s)Owners' initials "IT/MF" stamped on face of handle.Mark(s)Touch mark an elaborate openwork design of decorative cording with "I" or "T" to the left and "P" to the right within a beaded circle on underside of handle. "TP" in relief-cast letters on face of triangular reinforcing tab of handle attachment.ProvenancePurchased from A.V. Sutherland-Graeme, London.
