DescriptionSalver. MAKER'S TOUCHES: 1) a winged griffin rampant on a wreath bar with a plume-like member to either side and crossed below with "THOMAS BANCKS" in block letters below within a curved reserve and all within a circle. 2) "R*Bancks in block letters within a rectangle. Secondary mark "X" with a crown above within a conformeing reserve. All marks on underside of top. Circular top or tray in the ofrm of a broad flat circular plate with rolled rim in short moulded sides; rather tall circular stem with demi-knop attachment to underside of plate flaring at bottom to concave circular base with flared edge. "WDC" in block letters with a crown above each letter engraved on face of plate near rim. (Unidentified)Label TextLittle is known of either maker. Their marks, as they appear on this salver, are usually illustrated together. Homer and Hall have speculated whether Robert Banks, probably of Bewdley, may have on occasion factored the work of Thomas Banks of Wigan.Inscription(s)Owners' initials "D/WC" with a crown over each stamped on upper face near rim.Mark(s)Touch mark the crest of a griffin rampant on a wreath bar with fronds or plumes to either side and crossing below with "THOMAS BANCKS" in curved arrangement below, all within a circle stamped twice on underside of well (Cotterell 234; Homer & Hall, p. 138, no. 4). Secondary marks (1) label "R+BANCKS" within an oblong rectangle on underside of well below repeated touch mark (Cotterell 234; Homer & Hall, p. 138, no. 4) and (2) quality "X" with crown above and an apparent frond to either side within a conforming reserve above and between repeats of touch mark on underside of well.ProvenanceVendor: Thomas D. & Constance R.
