DescriptionSpoon: slip-end type; narrow handle of elongated hexagonal section with end terminating in an oblique angle and sides nearly straight; handle slightly flared to receive fig-shaped bowl without drop on underside. Block letters "W" and "E" within shaped shields stamped on face of bowl near maker's mark. (Unidentified)Label TextSlip-end spoons are conspicuous for their lack of a finial and the oblique termination of their handle end, resembling a gardener's slip. Surviving silver ones date over an extended period from the last decades of the fifteenth century until the third quarter of the seventeenth century.Inscription(s)Owner's initials "W" and "E" within separate shaped shields stamped on face of bowl to either side of touch mark.Mark(s)Touch mark a hand holding a spoon with "W" to the left and "A" to the right within a beaded circle on face of bowl below juncture with handle (Cotterell 5402).ProvenanceVendor: A.V.
