DescriptionTop level: Four white slipped sockets around central socket slip trailed "1668." Level 2: Four flattened handles decorated with ovoid stamped slip ornament on spine and slip dotting on edges. Central stem slip trailed and dotted with spiral and foliate designs. Level 3: Four handles similar to above with "raspberry prunted" slip stamped spines edged in slip dots. Slip trailed vertical lines on stem. Level 4: Four handles similar in shape and ornament to Level 2. Central stem with slip trailed and dotted foliage and borders. Level 5: Four handles similar to Level 3 central stem slip trailed with vertical lines. Base: bordered with 2 rows slip dotting between which are groups of 3 stamped raspberry prunts.Label TextThis rare pair of thrown and hand-formed candlesticks from Wrotham bears both trailed slip and stamped relief decoration and is dated 1668. They are attributed to potter George Richardson because of other similar examples initialed "GR" (in the collections of the British Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Manchester City Art Gallery).
