DescriptionPlate: circular plate with molded wavy shell edge border. The edge painted brown; the well of the plate painted with a version of the "Chinese house pattern" depicting a stylized pagoda between overhanging stylized tress and amidst a landscape, all within a circular reserve delineated by a band of orange.Label TextThe Chinese house pattern in its many variations decorating shell-edge plates painted in a variety of colors turns up archaeologically at numerous sites in late-18th and early 19th century America. Often identified by their color and the term “edged,” molded shell-edged wares are advertised in period newspapers and listed in inventories. Brown shell edge wares are usually attributed to Yorkshire potteries.
