DescriptionPlate: circular plate with molded scalloped shell-edged border. The edge painted green; the well of the plate painted in brown, yellow, and orange with a stylized house flanked by two sets of Chinese rail fencing and foliage amidst a stylized landscape.Label TextFragments of green shell-edged dishes have been uncovered at archaeological sites throughout late-18th and early 19th century America. Often identified by their color and the term “edge” or “edged,” molded shell-edged wares were advertised in period newspapers and listed in inventories, as well. Dishes marked “Davenport” are also noted in Maryland and Virginia newspaper advertisements from the early 19th century.Inscription(s)Impressed "Davenport" in lowercase letters on the reverse within the foot ring.
