DescriptionSilver inverted-pear sugar bowl with a circular, stepped foot and incised lines below verticle rim. Removable domed cover with a molded upper and lower rims. Coat of arms engraved on the belly and a crest of a king on the top.Label TextThis is a relatively late sugar bowl to have this type of invertible cover with a reel-shaped handle and foot. Most double-bellied rococo examples have a finial on their double-domed covers.Inscription(s)Arms engraved on face of body and crest on top of cover. Those of the first quarter are unidentified, but would appear to be of Irish or Scottish provenance. Those of the third quarter (excluding the impalement) are of Peirse, Yorkshire and Kent.Mark(s)Maker's mark "ST" in Germanic letters within a heart, leopard's head crowned, lion passant, and date letter "t" on underside of base. Maker's mark and lion passant on interior of cover.ProvenanceGarrard & Co. Ltd., London (purchased from S. G.Schwersee, Finchingfield, Essex, 1954)
