DescriptionCovered sugar bowl with a knob finial atop a domed circular cover with a stepped rim and a centering lip to the underside. Tumbler-shaped body with a thickened rim and a round, moulded foot.Label TextThough unmarked, this particular form of covered sugar bowl is known to have been made only by Thomas Danforth II and is a rarity today. Only living to see his 52nd birthday, Danforth founded a dynasty of pewterers which spanned eighteen descendants and four generations. When he died in 1782, his estate was valued at £2200, attesting to his success as a metalworker, and his name is still associated with pewter wares today.ProvenancePurchased privately by the donor from the estate of a collector named Hartford.
