DescriptionSilver bowl with a square base and a circular, incurving neck with a moulded top. Its hemispherical bowl has a rim reinforced by an applied moulded edge.Label TextElizabeth Cortelyou, the original owner of this fine silver bowl, descended from an ancient Huguenot family which arrived in New York City when it was still under Dutch control. Bowls of this size could have been used for a number of purposes during the end of the 18th century, ranging from punch to the discards of tea.Inscription(s)Front of bowl with a bright cut and wriggled oval surrounding "EC" intertwined, engraved in sprigged script. Foot scratched with the weight "15 oz" in the two corners not occupied by Underhill's mark.Mark(s)Bottom of bowl struck with "T U" within a rectangle and "I V" within a shield, both in relief. Two, opposite corners of the base carry the "TU" mark also.ProvenanceOriginally owned by Elizabeth Cortelyou. Purchased from Israel Sack, Inc. (New York), on October 11, 1972.
