DescriptionSilver bowl with a narrow circular foot supporting a hemispherical body. Both the bottom of the foot and the rim of the bowl have applied moulded and beaded bands. Below the rim are bright cut and pricked bands, and the front is embellished with a similarly engraved shield containing the cypher "CM" in foliate script. Above and to the sides of the shield are rope swags supporting flowered sprigs, while a pair of crossed branches appear below.Label TextBorn in New York City before the Revolutionary War, Hutton was working as an apprentice silversmith in Albany by 1780. On his own and taking apprentices by 1792, Hutton produced a wide variety of goods including punch bowls like this fine example, silver hilts for swords, and teapots.Inscription(s)Weight markings of "12 - 10" and value(?) markings of "18 - 4 - 3" are scratched into the bottom.Mark(s)Center of bottom struck "HUTTON" and "ALBANY," each in relief within a rectangle.ProvenancePurchased from Eric Shrubsole, Ltd.
