DescriptionPlate: circular dish with broad rim decorated with opaque enamels. The center painted with the arms of Tower: Sable a tower or, crest A griffin passant per pale or and azure the wing, addorsed of the first, with the motto “Love and Dread” (armorial description from Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p. 229). The cavetto painted with a band of pink diaper interrupted by four oval reserves containing auspicious symbols. The band bordered by a gilt band of circles and modified spears. The rim painted with the crest at the top and three vining floral strands. The underside of the rim painted with four single leafy peonies in red.ProvenanceOrdered around 1728 for Christopher and Thomas Tower, Joint Auditors of “His Majestie’s Revenue” and Trustees of the Colony of Georgia. In 1988 with Henry Ford II (Deerfield, Indiana) when it was sold by Sotheby’s, New York. With Mrs. Henry Ford II until it was sold at Christie’s, New York, in 2021 to Angela Howard of Heirloom and Howard (Chippenham, Wiltshire, England). With Angela Howard until October 2025 when she sold it to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, Virginia) where it remains to the present.
