DescriptionHard-paste porcelain soup plate: wavy edge decorated with flourishing c-scrolls; the well of the plate decorated with pagoda-like structures amidst a mountainous riverscape, all encircled by an unusual outward-pointing gilt spearhead border.Label TextPhilip van Rensselaer and Maria Sanders of Albany, New York, married in 1768. Philip became an extremely successful merchant with close ties to the China trade. This plate is in a pattern known to have been owned by the Van Rensselaers and used at Philip and Maria's estate Cherry Hill. It serves as an important addition to our collection of Chinese porcelain associated with families in mid-18th century America and (with dish 2010-39) allows Colonial Williamsburg to tell a more complete story of several branches of a prominent family highly involved in the China trade.
