DescriptionA boy in white and green with red trim and black boots lies on his stomach on a yellow sled supported on four wheels.Label TextThis tiny object is an example of a penny toy. Primarily made between 1890 and 1935, these toys were intended to retail for just a penny. By the early 20th century, advancement in lithography and production, allowed for the creation of more detailed pieces that could still be sold cheaply. More children than ever could afford one.

The toy started as a flat sheet of printed tinplate that was then cut, shaped, and assembled. Over the decades of production, hundreds of different designs were produced including all manner of vehicles from horse drawn to the latest car to planes and trains. Animals and people were also popular subjects. This sledder from the 1920s was likely made by Meier, one of the manufacturers of penny toys in Germany. On the boy’s thighs in small lettering is GES. GESCH. referring to Gesetzlich Geschutzt meaning that all or part of the toy was covered by a patent. Germany was one of the main exporters of these toys.
