DescriptionVinaigretteLabel TextVinaigrettes--small boxes of varied form containing a sponge soaked with aromatic vinegar behind an interior grille--revived the function of the earlier pomander. They were produced in large numbers during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries mainly in Birmingham, the center of the English "toy" trade, and to a lesser extent in London. During the early part of this period, Samuel Pemberton was one of the most prolific makers of vinaigrettes and related small wares, such as scent bottle cases.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)Fully marked both on interior of cover and base.ProvenanceAnonymous GiftAcquired by CWF in 1971.
