DescriptionStorage Jar: salt-glazed stoneware cylindrical body rises to corded neck and slightly rolled rim; two lug handles flank the body at the shoulder; decorated in cobalt with a whimsical peafowl below a sponged arch and above a sponged ground almost representing a torse; the number "4" sponged between the ground and another sponged line at the foot of the vessel; the fronts of the squared-off lug handles painted with blue; an impressed "4" just above the left side of the cobalt arch; the interior of the jar covered in albany slip.Inscription(s)The number "4" sponged between the ground and another sponged line at the foot of the vessel; an impressed "4" just above the left side of the cobalt arch.Mark(s)The number "4" sponged between the ground and another sponged line at the foot of the vessel; an impressed "4" just above the left side of the cobalt arch.ProvenancePurchased from Pembroke Antiques, 1971.
