DescriptionJug with high neck; small lip spout; large loop handle forming a coil at the bottom; large bulbous body, of red clay covered with a white slip (cut out to form the design) and yellow lead glaze. The exterior base is left unglazed. The neck has bands of leaves and zig-zag patterns. On the body below the spout is a 3-masted ship in full sail before which is the inscription: "The Bucton Castle Crossing the Line". The ship sails on the water indicated by wavy lines in which swim a line of fish. Below the fish at the bottom of the jug are a pair of anchors and an inscription: "From Rocks and Sands and every Ill May God Protect Me Sailor Still" and a large chip where a date once was. To the left of the handle are mblems including a compass showing the 32 points , the sun, the man in the moon in a crescent, and stars.ProvenanceEx coll."C.B. Kidd #1303
