DescriptionCylindrical mug with flared molded base and strap-loop handle turning out at base. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with a simulated coat of arms--a ship under full sail on the shield and a fish crest--the inscription "Lydia Waller / 1748" and rococo strapwork framing the handle; on the handle, a floral spray.Label TextThe face of this delft mug is decorated with a simulated coat of arms and inscribed "Lydia Waller / 1748." A large proportion of the arms on English delft represent London companies, and it has been suggested that the arms depicted here represent a "simulated Sailors' Company coat of arms." It is also possible that this mug is the counterpart to the popular ship bowls of this period and that the inscription might have read "Success to the Lydia Waller."
