DescriptionSugar basket or basin: Slender arched bail handle with molded face attached with pivots to either side of rim in center; riased boat-shaped body of oval plan with rim of serpentine contour and dropped or double belly supported on broad pedestal base of oval plan with short reeded sides; drawn molding with reeded face applied at rim with narrow bright-cut engraved border of repetitive swag design below above a wider openwork band of scrolled foliate design with circular medallions at ends; openwork band engraved with modest border pricked border of swags below; lower part of body above base prick-engraved with band of narrow panels of bat-wing design; top of base engraved with narrow bright-cut and pricked swag border above reeded sides.Inscription(s)Engraved in script "JER" on one sideMark(s)Fully marked on underside of base: 1) retailer's mark "TD" within an oval [Grimwade 1990, # 2729] overstriking sponsor's mark "?? / WH" within a rectangle [possibly Grimwade 1990, # 1541, for John Mince and William HodgkinsII]; 2) leopard's head crowned; 3) lion passant; 4) date letter "n" for 1788-89; and 5) sovereign's head duty mark.ProvenanceVendor: Tessier's, Ltd., London
