Label TextChinese porcelain covered in a brown slip was popular in Europe and Colonial America. This example, made in Yorkshire from earthenware clay in imitation of porcelain, was a less expensive option for those who could not afford the more costly Chinese wares. Ceramics of this type are most commonly known today as pearlware, but during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they were called China glaze.
