DescriptionPorringer form; bowl with low neck, body and low-domed base; pierced handle of crowned disc surrounded by foliate scrolls; initials D C engraved on bowl.Label TextPorringers with handles with a ducal coronet over a plain circular reserve for stamped or engraved owner's initials or other designations placed in the center and framed by foliated scrolls first appear in English pewter about 1715. By far, the great majority of these porringers come from Bristol and bear the marks of makers whose work was exported to America, such as Stephen Cox, the maker of this example, Allen Bright, the maker of CWF accessions 1963-144, 1-2, Richard Going, Robert Bush I, Burgum & Catcott, and Ingram & Hunt. This is not surprising since most porringers of this type date after the English had abandoned the form and produced it almost exclusively for export.Inscription(s)Owner's initials "D+C" engraved on face of body opposite handle.Mark(s)Touch mark a rose encircled by " STEPHEN COX" within a circle on underside of handle (Peal MPM 1189).
