Decorated with gilt on red monogram "WE" in script.Label TextThis drum-shaped teapot is from one of nine tea sets ordered by supercargo Samuel Shaw for members of the Society of the Cincinnati. Each tea service bears the eagle insignia of the Society and the initials of its respective owner, this example with the gilt monogram “WE” for William Eustis. Eustis was a surgeon during the American Revolution and, after returning to private practice, he held numerous public offices after the war. He was elected to the House of Representatives, served as Secretary of War under Presidents Jefferson and Madison, and was Governor of Massachusetts.
