DescriptionDoorstop in the shape of a sleeping dogLabel TextAfter several years working in the Edgefield district of South Carolina for Joseph Baynham, Thomas Hahn moved to the Southern Pottery Company in North Augusta (now Schultz Township). By 1900, Hahn had established his own pottery, the Hahn Pottery Works in Augusta, Georgia. There is some speculation that he also had his own pottery across the river in North Augusta, South Carolina. Regardless, this doorstop can be attributed to Tom Hahn and the Hahn Pottery works because it is identical to another also in the shape of a dachshund, which was sold at auction on January 26, 1994 at Harmer Rooke Galleries in New York. That piece was marked on the base 'Augusta GA.' thereby attributing it to the Hahn Pottery Works. This mark also appears on Albany slip glazed fruit jars dating to the same period. Thomas Hahn's father, W. F. (Willie) Hahn, was also a potter working in the same region.ProvenancePreviously owned by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Goldberg of New Jersey
