DescriptionFour handled, 16 gallon storage jar.Label TextDaniel Seagle was an important potter in the Catawba Valley of North Carolina in the nineteenth century. His work was utilitarian, but very thinly potted for its size and impressive in its overall aesthetic. Along with Thomas Chandler, he is known today as having been a master of the four-handled storage jar. This form is also closely associated with Catawba Valley stoneware generally. This type of vessel was made into the twentieth century, so this Seagle storage jar helps to illustrate the longevity of this North Carolina potting tradition.Mark(s)Seagle's mark is on one handle, and another handle has "16", indicating the capacity.ProvenancePurchased from: Luke Beckerdite LLC1884 (dated)
