DescriptionModified urn form pewter teapot.Label TextGeorge Richardson produced an ample quantity of well designed, well made, and well marked teapots, in particular. He was born in London about 1782. He worked first for a decade in Boston after 1818 and then possibly as foreman of Burrage Yale's Britannia and pewter shop in South Reading, Massachusetts, from 1829 to 1833. Richardson was in Cranston, Rhode Island, by 1839, the year the Glennore Company was established. The teapots with the Cranston mark, but lacking the Glennore mark, were probably made between the dissolution of the Glennore Company in 1841 and Richardson's departure for Providence, Rhode Island, in 1845. The handle and finial inset of this handsome example is cast and japanned black.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)Touch mark a label with "G.RICHARDSON" within a serrated rectangle on underside of base (Laughlin III, p. 111). Secondary marks, also on underside of base, (1) "GLENNORE Co" within a curved and serrated rectangle, (2) "CRANSTON.R.I." within a curved and serrated rectangle, (3) an American eagle displayed within a vertical oval, (4) "No" within a serrated rectangle, and (5) "A" (Laughlin III, p. 111).ProvenanceGift of Mr. and Mrs. Foster McCarl, Jr., Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
