DescriptionMan with dark hair tied with ribbon behind neck, blue eyes. Head and shoulders turned 3/4 left proper, eyes to viewer. Sitter wears white ruffled shirt with very small white bow tie, white vest with pink trim, blue coat with large decorated buttons. Pale blue mottled background.Label TextJames Geddy III grew up on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg. His father, James Geddy, Jr., was a successful artisan who practiced the trades of jeweler and silversmith. After the Revolution, the Geddys moved their business from Williamsburg to Petersburg. Young James married a Petersburg woman in 1789 and became a partner in his father's business in 1790. This portrait probably marked the occasion of his marriage to Euphan Armistead.ProvenanceDescended in the Geddy family.
