DescriptionBed counterpane of white plain weave cotton, embroidered in naive design using heavy white thread. The design consists of thin meandering stems with leaves and flowers, with stylized baskets of flowers filling spaces between meandering stems. Baskets have down-curving symmetrical leaves and globe-shaped bases. The counterpane is made of two selvage-width panels, seamed horizontally by butting at selvages, and is trimmed with a 6" ruffle sewn to the bottom and left sides (as seen when facing the coverlet.) Stitches include chain, satin, couched satin, outline, bullion, cross, and blanket.ProvenanceSaid by donor to have come from Guilford County, North Carolina.
