DescriptionTwo red oxen are hitched to a two-wheeled wagon on left side of foreground. A man carries a basket of corn toward oxen, and brown and white spotted dog lies on ground in front of the oxen. To right are great shucks of corn tied up in field. Another group of corn lies on the ground and a man wearing a brown vest and grey hat stands up tying corn together, and a black man kneels on the corn shucks and seems to be husking an ear. There are fields off to the left and a white house and farm buildings behind the figures. A tree behind the house has lost its leaves.Label TextAccording to family tradition, this genre scene is attributed to Thomas Buckman of Lynn, Massachusetts. It was copied by the artist from an engraved print that appeared in a calendar series for GLEASON'S PICTORIAL DRAWING ROOM COMPANION in 1854, drawn by Peirce.ProvenanceFound in South Chatham, Mass., and purchased from the Old Print Shop, New York, NY.
