DescriptionRectangular dome lid box hinged lid coverd in brown tooled and gilt leather; handle in center of top (bail missing); iron lock on center of front (hasp no longer attached); leather tooled in diamond pattern with scrolled border at edge. Lined with uncut book pages from John Fox, THE BOOK OF MARTYRS (London, 1776) overprinted with black stemmed flowers. Woven tape (broken) nailed to inside of lid and case on proper right end.Mark(s)Uncut book pages line the interior of this box. One side with heading "THE LIVES OF THE MARTYRS. [p]477" with the comments of York, Philpot, and Chichester; the other "Another Letter To the Same Lady" with a letter above it signed by "John Philpot." These pages appear to be from the thirteenth examination of John Philpot by the archbishop of York and divers other bishops from the "Examination and Writings of John Philpot... Martry" published in the 1776 edition of THE BOOK OF MARTYRS by John Fox (London).ProvenanceBelieved to have descended in the family of Col. John Stuart, Stuart Manor, Lewisburg, West Virginia. Possible line of descent: Col.
