Thomas Boulsover gave a plated shell and scroll edged salver to his daughter on the occasion of her marriage in 1760, presumably of his own manufacture. The rims of most early salvers, as in this example, are composed of a double layer soldered back to back for added strength and ease of attachment to the central plate. The rim, as well as the three short cabriole legs ending in ball and claw feet, are stampings, the latter filled with solder. The crest and motto on the face are engraved on a rubbed-in silver shield to permit the engraver greater depth. This was probably added later.Inscription(s)Crest and motto of the Smith family, barons of Carrington, Nottinghamshire, engraved on face; owners' cypher "TJN" engraved on undersideMark(s)UnmarkedProvenanceEx Coll: Mr. and Mrs. Oliver F.
