The London hallmarks for 1679–1680 are still discernible at the edge on the back of the top. Opposite these marks, traces of an earlier coat of arms are still visible. By neither melting down the old object nor completely hammering out the earlier marks and engraving, the silversmith saved both time and money.Inscription(s)Engraved in center of top surface with the arms of Francklyn impaling Rich, for Sir Richard Francklyn, 2nd Baronet of Moore Park, Co. Mark(s)Marked in relief on top: 1) sponsor’s mark “TI” with escallops above and below in between the letters [see Grimwade 1990, p. 755]; 2) leopard’s head crowned; 3) lion passant; and 4) date letter “p” in Gothic script for 1692-93 Traces of relief marks also visible on reverse of top: 1) lion passant; and 2) date letter “b” in Gothic script for 1679-80.
