Faber Fecit 1733."Label TextA double portrait of brother-in-laws Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768) and Henry Clinton, 7th Earl of Lincoln (1684-1728). They were related through marriage when Clinton married Pelham-Holles' sister Hon. Lucy Pelham in 1717. Both men were supposedly members of the Kit-Kat club and hold glasses thought to have been made specifically for the club. The building in the distance represents the Belevedere Tower, a landscape folly designed by fellow KIt-Kat Club member Sir John Vanburgh (see 1979-73) for Newcastle's seat of Claremont, near Esher. The original portrait by Kneller is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (UK) NPG 3215.ProvenanceBefore 1982, the Old Print Shop (New York, NY); 1982-present, purchased by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
